Shoulder injuries
The shoulder is the most complex joint in body and can be injured due to repetitive stress in overhead athletes and workers as well as acute trauma from falls and contact sports. As a sports medicine specialist, Dr. George Ackerman has extensive training in treating shoulder injuries with innovative nonsurgical modalities and minimally invasive surgical techniques.
Rotator Cuff Injuries
A rotator cuff tears can occur from an acute fall or accident or chronic repetitive stress on the shoulder such as overhead athletes and laborers. Often patients do not recall any injury to the shoulder and they tendon simply wore down over time due to everyday wear and tear.
Labrum Tears
Shoulder Instability (dislocation or subluxation) can result from a tear in the labrum. Injuries such as falls and collisions in contact sports can injure the labrum and cause it to tear. Shoulder dislocations almost always result in a labral tear. Individuals who perform a lot of overhead motions such as throwers and volleyball players are prone to superior labral (SLAP) tears. Symptoms of a labral tear include pain, clicking, popping, and sensations of instability.
